Jiu Jitsu Training: Why You Should Start Training ASAP

There’s something unique about jiu jitsu training: you can’t really rush your progress. It’s just not a real ‘hackable’ skill. Oh sure, you can quit your job, train full time, live as a professional athlete, and there’s no doubt you’ll progress quicker than a hobbyist. But in jiu jitsu, you’ll always be limited by how many hours you can spend training and rolling – and how many hours your body can take. Since most of us can’t become professional jiu jitsu athletes, the real power that we have when it comes to advancing in jiu jitsu is to simply start training ASAP. Like right now. Like today.

In the past, we’ve discussed how long it takes, how many hours and rolls you need to advance in jiu jitsu, whether that’s to become an expert or just to get a blue belt. Today, we want to share a common theme we’ve heard from jiu jitsu practitioners across the country. If there’s one thing you’ll hear over and over again, even from top jiu jitsu athletes, it’s always, “I wish I had started sooner.”

When it comes to a sport or skill set like jiu jitsu that requires slow and steady development, the only thing that matters is going to be putting in hours on the mats. You need to begin learning, you need to begin rolling, and you need to do it as soon as you can. The main reason people quit anything, including jiu jitsu, is because they have no patience. When progress is slow, people get frustrated. Let’s face it – unlike kids, adults are SO uncomfortable being bad at things! Even things they’re brand new at! So the idea of experiencing slow progress and exercising patience keeps people from starting and continuing their jiu jitsu journey.

And one thing is true: it sucks to suck at something. Especially when sucking at that something means you’re actually getting your ass kicked. This sport ain’t for everyone. Because not everyone has what it takes to handle the slow progress, to exercise extreme patience under duress.

It takes a special person to dedicate themselves to this challenge. If that’s not you, move on. But if that challenge excites you, we have a message for you today: Start training right now.

You’ll be hard pressed to find anyone in jiu jitsu who started training at, say 30 years old, who will tell you, “Oh sure, I started training at the perfect time, I love being a blue belt!” NOOOO!! Every single time, that person will tell you how they wish they had started grappling sooner, how they wish they had started as a kid, how they wish they had wrestled in high school, and on and on and on. Because when you advance enough in this sport, you begin to notice that the only decision you ever had any control over that could have affected your journey was your starting date. Start soon, progress soon. Delay your start, delay your progress. We’re serving up some tough love today – don’t delay for any reason.

Jiu jitsu training rewards the bold. It’s time to put aside your fears and get on the mats. We promise that we’ll treat you right and help you through the tough times together as a team here at Airlock Jiu Jitsu. See you today on the mats, right?
