You don’t get in shape to start jiu jitsu. You start jiu jitsu to get in shape.

That’s just one piece of info we share with any person who walks through the door at 10th Planet Airlock and says “I want to get in better shape first.”

You don’t. You come as you are and the training does the rest. Book a free class if you’re ready to see what we mean.

Why Jiu Jitsu Works When Other Workouts Fail

Here’s the problem with most fitness routines: they’re boring. Running on a treadmill is boring. Doing the same circuit of machines three days a week is boring. And boring is the reason most gym memberships get used for two months and then collect dust until you finally cancel.

Jiu jitsu is the opposite of boring. Every class is different. Every training partner is a different puzzle. Every roll is a live problem you’re solving with your body in real time. You’re so focused on what’s happening on the mat that you forget you’re working out. Then you get home, sit down, and realize you just did an hour of full-body cardio and strength training without ever thinking about it.

That’s why people stick with jiu jitsu. The fitness is a byproduct of something you genuinely enjoy doing. You keep showing up because the training is interesting, challenging, and social. The weight loss, the cardio improvements, the strength gains, they all happen because you’re having too much fun to quit.

What the Workout Looks Like

An hour of jiu jitsu is a serious full-body workout. Here’s what your body is doing during a typical class:

Warm-up: Movement-based drills from the 10th Planet Warmups system. Hip escapes, bridges, rolls, transitions. You’re moving your entire body through ranges of motion that most people haven’t used since they were kids.

Technique drilling: You’re learning and repeating movements with a partner. This means constant engagement of your core, legs, hips, and grip. Even the “learning” portion of class is physically demanding because you’re moving another human being.

Live rolling: This is where the real conditioning happens. Rolling is grappling against a resisting partner for 5-6 minute rounds. Your heart rate spikes. Every muscle in your body is working. You’re pushing, pulling, framing, bridging, and scrambling continuously. Multiple rounds of this is one of the most effective cardio and strength workouts you can do.

And unlike a treadmill, you’re building functional strength and flexibility at the same time. Jiu jitsu uses your body the way it was designed to move: pushing, pulling, rotating, stabilizing under load from every angle.

The Results Are Real

Our head instructor Rei Villa lost significant weight through his own jiu jitsu journey. He’s been training and teaching for over a decade, and the physical transformation that came with consistent mat time is something he talks about openly.

He’s far from the only one. We’ve had members lose over 50 pounds training at 10th Planet Airlock. These are people who showed up, trained consistently, and let the work on the mat do what other gyms and diets couldn’t. Jiu jitsu can be transformational in that way.

When you first start, everything feels stiff and unfamiliar. Your body is being asked to do things it hasn’t done before. But the changes happen fast. Within weeks, most people notice improvements in flexibility, endurance, and how their body feels day to day. Within months, the physical changes become visible.

Why It’s Sustainable

People train jiu jitsu for decades. That’s the difference between jiu jitsu and a fitness program. A fitness program has an end date. You do the 12-week challenge, you hit the goal (or you don’t), and then you stop because the motivation was external. Jiu jitsu is a skill. The deeper you get into it, the more there is to learn. There’s always a new technique, a new position, a new problem to solve. That depth is what keeps people training at 40, 50, 60, and beyond.

We’ve been open for over three years now, and many of our earliest members are still on the mat every week because it never gets less interesting.
