Why Do We Compete in Jiu Jitsu?

Why do we compete? The real answer…

Competing is hard. It’s scary. It’s intense.

Some people don’t care to do it.

And some people LIVE for it.

You choose your path, but know this…

Competing will show you things about yourself you never knew.

Here’s our take…

You don’t have to become a world champion to benefit from competing in jiu jitsu. It’s all about competing with yourself.

Are you competitive?

It’s ok if the answer is no, by the way. Many folks in the jiu jitsu community never compete or only do it once or twice.

Honestly, that’s fine with us. There are a million reasons why people do jiu jitsu and there are a million more benefits you can receive from doing this sport. Very few of them require competing.

However, we will say… competing can be amazing for your growth as a martial artist and a human.

You don’t have to win an IBJJF World championship, you don’t have to compete under the lights in a super fight, and you don’t have to aim for UFC BJJ.

You’ll grow your skills and strengthen your mindset from a local tournament with friendly competitors, like a Grappling Industries or a NAGA, just as effectively.

A wise man once said, “Competing in jiu jitsu is the closest you can safely get to a ‘real fight.’ Those stakes, while remaining in a mostly safe environment, will push your mind to new limits.”

How true. You’ll never feel adrenaline like it. How cool can you keep?

A (less) wise man once said, “It’s just a Grappling Industries, no one gives a sh*t who wins.”

How true! The medal doesn’t matter. The wins and losses don’t matter. When you challenge yourself at a local competition, you’re there for you. And we’re there for you, too.

That’s exactly how we felt this weekend. We took a small group, a handful of our Lil’ Astronauts, and one of our stellar white belt adults out to Grappling Industries Austin to seek out challenge.

They took on tough matches and even opponents. They fought hard, fair, and with kindness.

They came together as a team because they understand that THIS is where we put our skills to the true test, not sparring with each other in the gym.

They even took matches in higher age brackets and skill levels just so they could compete with themselves to see what they were made of (and because a difficult medal is the only one worth obtaining).

So, no, you don’t have to compete if you want to train jiu jitsu on the 10P Airlock team. But if you decide to, we’ll get you ready and help you soak up the benefits of a true personal challenge.

Either way, let’s get ready for whatever life brings.

Start by taking a 1-hour FREE trial class at the #1 BEST Martial Arts Gym in Bastrop (per the people).
