Is Women’s Jiu Jitsu Safe? Training at 10th Planet Airlock in Bastrop

By Coach Andrea – @americanjiujiteira

If you or a woman in your life has been thinking about trying jiu jitsu for the first time, it’s completely normal to wonder, “Is women’s jiu jitsu safe?” The truth is, jiu jitsu is a combat sport, and it can get intense sometimes! But at 10th Planet Airlock in Bastrop, we know that safety, respect, and discipline are core tenants of the martial art. We prioritize these values in everything we do, especially in our free women’s class.

Let’s Be Real

Let’s be real: like any sport, there’s always a chance of bumps, bruises, or the occasional injury. But in our women’s jiu jitsu program, we train smart and stay mindful of each other. Every student is encouraged to communicate, move at her own pace, and learn proper technique before going full speed. That approach keeps training safe and sustainable while still giving you the challenge and excitement you came for.

Training Partners Who Care

At 10th Planet Airlock, we don’t train with opponents, we train with friends. Every partner is taught to respect and prioritize your safety, no matter the situation. In our women’s class, we emphasize control, awareness, and respect, making sure to apply all submissions slowly and give our partners time to tap. The moment you tap, the submission is released. That mutual trust is the magic of jiu jitsu and the reason why we can practice a combat sport in a controlled, safe environment.

Slow and In Control

Most accidents in non-competitive jiu jitsu are often not from submissions, but from people from moving too quickly or recklessly. That’s why we encourage beginners to slow down, breathe, and focus on learning proper movement. Going slow doesn’t hold you back, it actually helps you progress faster, stay safer, and feel more confident as you build your foundation.

The Bruise Badge of Honor

You might notice a few small bruises after class, and that’s completely normal. It’s all part of the process of getting tougher as you engage in this sport. Think of them as proof that you’re showing up and putting in effort. Around here, we call them badges of hard work: little reminders of your growing strength and resilience.

Strength Over Fear

Yes, there’s risk. But when you train in a controlled environment that prioritizes your safety, the rewards far outweigh the risks. With every class, you’re learning how to defend yourself, stay calm under pressure, and build real confidence that extends beyond the mats. The community of women you’ll meet here will lift you up, push you forward, and remind you that you’re capable of so much more than you think.

If you (or a woman in your life) has been interested in trying jiu jitsu, but held back wondering, “Is women’s jiu jitsu safe?” our free women’s class at 10th Planet Airlock is the perfect place to start. You’ll find a supportive community, great coaching, and a safe environment designed to help you grow, one class at a time.
