If you’ve been thinking about starting women’s jiu jitsu but worry you’re not “fit enough,” you’re not alone. Many women hesitate to start because they think they need to be stronger, more flexible, or in better shape first. The truth is you don’t need to be an athlete to begin. You just need to show up.
At 10th Planet Airlock, our free women’s jiu jitsu class is designed for every woman, regardless of experience or fitness level. Everyone moves at their own pace, and simply doing what you can each class is enough. Over time, your body naturally adapts. You’ll find yourself getting stronger, moving better, and feeling more confident each week.
Start Where You Are
You don’t have to “get in shape” before starting women’s jiu jitsu. Jiu jitsu gets you in shape. Each class challenges your body and mind in a unique way, building strength, cardio endurance, and problem-solving skills all at once. Everyone trains at their own pace, and it’s completely normal to take breaks when you need to. You can pause, breathe, and jump back in when you’re ready. The important thing is to keep showing up and doing what you can.
As you get more comfortable, you’ll start finding little moments to push yourself. You’ll start to discover how much you can do even when you’re tired, whether it’s doing one more live drill or staying in for one more round. That’s how real progress happens: one small step, one class at a time. Over time, you’ll feel yourself getting stronger, more capable, and more confident on the mats.
A Workout Like No Other
Jiu jitsu is an intense, full-body workout unlike anything you’ve done before. In fact, jiu jitsu is such a unique workout that people who ARE in great shape are often surprised at what a great workout it is! Unlike running or lifting weights, in this martial art, the “weight” actually fights back (and sometimes sits on you!). You’ll use every muscle group while learning practical self-defense skills that empower you on and off the mats.

Progress in jiu jitsu isn’t always linear. Some days you’ll feel unstoppable, and others will test your patience, but every class moves you forward in some way. You’ll notice your movements getting smoother, your breathing getting easier, and your mindset getting stronger. Growth shows up not just in what your body can do, but in your confidence, resilience, and the way you handle challenges on and off the mats.
